What are Australian Standards (AS):

AS are a set of technical guidelines and specifications. They aim to ensure consistency, safety, and quality across a wide range of sectors in Australia. AS are developed and administered by Standards Australia, an independent, not-for-profit organization.

Voluntary Nature:

AS nationally, provide guidance and are widely adopted to demonstrate compliance with industry norms. They are only mandatory if they are referred to in legislation, regulations, contracts, or specific industry requirements. However compliance to AS may be used to help determine compliance to relevant Work Health and Safety Acts. 

AS with regards to Signage:

Signage is essential for conveying information, promoting safety, and guiding people in different settings, such as public spaces, workplaces, roads, and buildings. Background, Reflective Properties, Font and Design Colours along with Sizes and Layouts are all specified to ensure they are easily recognizable and understood.
